The story of Sierra Nevada is one of overcoming the odds and of one man following his passion and ultimately changing the course of America craft brewing. Ken Grossman bought his first home brewing kit in 1969 as a teenager. After some time, in 1976 he opens The Home Brew Shop, starting slow but building momentum and soon is sought after by the locals. When in 1978 homebrewing is legalized Ken starts weighing up his options on what is next. Climbing trips to the Sierra Nevada mountains was a favourite past time for Ken, and it was on one of these trips that his bold idea began to take shape - build a brewery. The name, well that was an obvious choice.
In 1980 Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. produces its first trial batch of beer - 5 barrels of Stout. Later that same year, Ken took his first attempt at Pale Ale, resulting in a signature that sparked the American craft beer revolution.
From the story above, this beer is a legend, and I must say it truly lives up to it!
It pours a brilliant amber-gold colour with a clean white head which lasts reasonably long. The cascade hops provide great aromas of citrus and pine. With every taste the distinct Pale Ale flavours of citrus, spice, hops and caramel malt can be enjoyed. It has a light bitterness in the aftertaste which makes you realize you are drinking a proper beer.
One of the better beers I have had in recent times. If possible, and when available, this will most definitely become a regular purchase for me!
