A bit about the beer

Ingredients – Water, Malts (2-Row, Marris Otter, White Wheat), Hops (Cascade, Centennial, Citra), Saffron, Cardamom, Conan Yeast

Mantra Artisan Ales brewery started as a side project for Derrick Morse, former head brewer of Cool Springs Brewery. For the last four years it has been situated at 216 Noah Drive in Franklin where culinary-inspired beers have been made and served. The brand has grown to an all-encompassing beverage company and has three distinct brands that have outgrown all expectations when it started.

For this, very interesting one in their collection, the Saffron IPA, the official description from their site is "Brewed as a pacific northwest IPA the essence of saffron and cardamom flash in your mouth followed by a very present and flavorful floral hop finish. Drink this beer fresh".

My opinion is that it was an OK IPA. Mine had a large volume of yeast sediment in the bottle when I poured it. Suppose from tap it would be great. It poured an almost orange colour, with a white foam head which dissolves very quickly.

It is full of flavour, no doubt about that, with saffron the most prominent. The saffron taste is balanced with hop flavours and bitterness and the cardomom also comes through on the nose. Personally the Saffron didn't work for me, but I can definitely see how others would love this beer for that reason.

So, overall a good beer, with a lot going on in terms of flavours and aromas. Not your average dull, tasteless commercial beer, that is for sure!
