A bit about the beer
Ingredients – Water, Hops: Fuggles, Sovereign, Styrian & Cascade, Malt: Chocolate, Crystal
Wychwood beers have made a couple of appearances in the past on this blog (see Hobgoblin IPA and Hobgoblin Ruby Ale). Known for its character-based artwork on the bottle labels inspired by the myths and legends surrounding the ancient Wychwood Forest they really seem to deliver every time, and the King Goblin is definitely a case in point.
As per their website "this deep ruby coloured true King of Beers delivers aromas of treacle toffee and dried fruits. Brewed with a blend of the finest Crystal and Chocolate malts and the addition of Sovereign hops. Packed full of sweet caramel, coffee and earthy roasted malt flavours for a warming seal of approval. A full, rich, sublimely fruity & satisfying indulgent beer; a beer for the connoisseur of the finer things."
For me, poured from a bottle, and enjoyed in the middle of the desert, it has a ruby colour with medium off-white head. Aromas of caramel, sweet malt, toffee and some plum very nicely combines. On the taste the malt is present again, together with some elements of grapefruit, caramel and brown sugar. It has a very balanced bitter aftertaste which rounds the taste off very fittingly. An excellent beer!
