A bit about the beer
Ingredients - Water, Black Star pale malt
Jack Black 's beers has become a regular appearance on this blog. Some previous posts from them include their Skeleton Coast IPA, Cape Pale Ale and Atlantic Weiss. Please check them out if you haven't already.
The Brewers Lager is the one that started it all. It has been dubbed by the brewery as being the "pioneer of craft. South Africa’s original craft beer that started within the urban community and continues to be the go-to-craft lager".
The beer is Jack Black's flagship beer, inspired by the all malt beers of the early 1900s. It won Bronze in the Dublin Craft Beer Cup in 2015 and effectively kick-started a whole generation of craft beers across South Africa.
Poured from a bottle it has a clear golden colour with a fizzy white head that dissolves quickly. Aromas of malts and grains are prevalent and there are no trace in the smell of the "extras" which accompanies the more commercial lagers. It tastes like a lager, but just better! You get flavours of malt and grassy hops, again none of the "extras" in the taste - it is clean, nicely bittered and well balanced. The aftertaste also has just the right amount of bitterness.
Overall this is a highly refreshing and great beer, my favourite lager and one that is just perfect for a hot summer's day!
