A previous post on the Good Hope Pale Ale gives a bit of background on Devil's Peak Brewery, so go check it out if you are interested.

The King's Blockhouse Grapefruit IPA is another offering from their Expression range, and is a variation of their very famous and award winning King's Blockhouse IPA. The original Devil’s Peak King’s Blockhouse has won more awards than any other craft beer in South Africa, so this grapefruit accentuated version comes with some big expectations.

The official description is given as - "following in the King’s footsteps, this Grapefruit IPA is double dry-hopped, enhancing the hop flavour and aroma, with thanks to the impressive hop bill of Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, Columbus and inclusion of Cryo hops. The addition of Grapefruit lends freshness and perfectly complements the citrusy hop character of our original King’s Blockhouse IPA".

So, does the Grapefruit IPA live up to the standards set by the original King...? Absolutely!!

Poured from a bottle it has a hazy orange colour with a thin frothy white head that dissolves quickly. On the aromas grapefruit is the main actor, together with hints of pine and citrus. On the taste some more grapefruit, not at all overwhelming but still enough to provide a wonderful explosion of bitterness and hops. It has the usual suspects when it comes to IPAs - citrus, pine, but the enhanced grapefruit flavour just makes this one amazing. The aftertaste has a bitterness that lingers and is ever so inviting for the next sip to happen.

My new favourite IPA, this one is just fantastic. One thing to note, don't buy just one, make sure to get at least a 6 pack!
