Magic Rock Brewing was established in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in England by Richard Burhouse in 2011. The brewery has been listed on five times already on Ratebeer's "top 100" list of world breweries. The brewery opened in 2015 and produces an amount of 15,500 hectolitres of beer per year and they export to over 25 countries.
In 2019 the Australian beer and beverage company, Lion, acquired 100 percent of Magic Rock. Lion also owns the Castlemaine and Tooheys (see previous review of Tooheys New Lager) brands and also bought the London craft brewer Fourpure Brewing (see previous review of Fourpure's Shapeshifter) in 2018.
The official description states that "Cannonball is an India Pale Ale in the true tradition, high in alcohol and massively hopped to survive a long sea voyage. Tropically fruity, resinous hops compete against a sweet malty backbone, while a rasping bitterness builds to a mouth puckering crescendo".
For me, poured from a can it has a very pretty hazy orange golden colour with a small white head that does not last very long. It is BIG on aromas and flavours though, with the typical citrus fruit and malty aromas being very prominent. The taste though is amazing, it is a real hop-bomb combined with notes of pine and grapefruit and even a little grassy flavours coming through. It has a moderate bitterness, and you don't even notice the higher alcohol level in the taste. The long, dry bitterness lingers on your tongue for quite some time afterwards!
You can very easily make your whole evening (or afternoon) a Cannonball one!
